MORE DETAILS:

This course was originally designed for emerging adults (18-35ish), but is open to all, and differs from other mindfulness programs in several ways:

  • Teaches mindfulness meditation as well as stress-management skills

  • A brief model to accommodate busy schedules. Taught in four, weekly, 90-minute classes. I’ve added a bonus 5th week to dive more deeply into self-compassion skills!

  • Highly structured with daily homework: a mindfulness log and 10 minute mindfulness practice

  • Active teaching and community building to address skepticism and increase motivation

Research on mindfulness and meditation is extensive and demonstrates benefits such as:

  • Increased compassion for self and others

  • Reduced implicit race and age bias

  • Improved decision-making

  • A range of health benefits like lowered blood pressure and improved immune response

  • Decreased aggression

  • Decreased feelings of stress, worry, and fear

  • Improved sleep

  • and more!

TESTIMONIALS

Jennie's Koru course gave me an essential introduction to meditation principles and practices. The structure of the 4-week course, with readings, an app, and a commitment to meditate for 10 minutes every day, helped keep me accountable and on track. Our weekly meetings were a wonderful way to get to know the other students, learn new skills, and reflect on our experiences. Jennie guided us with grace and skill - I particularly appreciated the thoughtful replies she gave to the daily reflections I submitted in the app, which really helped expand my understanding of mindfulness. Several months later, I still meditate regularly and have tried to incorporate other mindfulness practices into my thinking and actions. I credit Jennie's Koru course with kicking off a journey that has allowed me to be more present and conscious in my daily life.” - Mindfulness student

“This course really helped me learn how to calm down and let go. I feel more peaceful and confident in myself.” - Mindfulness student

“I was surprised I actually had fun! And I find myself using the skills from this course all the time. It’s just a whole different way of looking at your life.” - Mindfulness student

MIEA (Formely KORU)

I serve as Faculty at the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults, and I’m also a certified MIEA Teacher. MIEA offers an evidence-based curriculum for teaching mindfulness to emerging adults. The curriculum was created by psychiatrist Dr. Holly Rogers, who co-founded MIEA (Formerly known as The Center for Koru Mindfulness) with Libby Webb. The MIEA course has been studied in a randomized control trial at Duke University where it demonstrated significant effects on participants including improved mood, decreased stress, improved sleep, and increased self compassion.

The 5-week introductory mindfulness meditation course advertised above is the original core curriculum from MIEA (Formerly Koru Basic) plus a bonus week to explore self-compassion practices in more depth, including the practice of GRAIN, a style of meditation that systematically engages internal material using guided prompts.

Like most secular mindfulness programs in the United States, the MIEA curriculum is derived from Vipassana Buddhism.

Yoga

I am not currently teaching any weekly yoga classes. Stay tuned…I continue to reimagine how this beloved practice fits into my life and conspire to create a new yoga offering one day soon. If you’re interested in bringing yoga and mindfulness offerings into a ritual or event in your life, please be in touch. I love to co-create meaningful experiences to honor occasions, people, or causes you care about.
